Woodrow's Delight

Cauley Woodrow was pleasantly surprised to learn that his effort against Leyton Orient had been voted Fulham’s Goal of the Season.

Five of the 15 nominees came from the left foot of Tom Cairney, and Woodrow admitted he had expected his teammate to complete a Player and Goal of the Season double.

“I thought Tom would win it to be fair,” he told fulhamfc.com. “He’s a fans’ favourite and he’s done really well this year, scoring some good goals along the way, so I expected him to win it.

“Obviously it’s nice to hear that I’ve won. Considering I didn’t really play for Fulham that much this year, it’s particularly nice to win Goal of the Season.

“It’s great that the fans are still showing that support to me and getting behind me by voting for my goal.”

The technique on the strike was immaculate. As Scott Parker rolled a free-kick his way, Woodrow put his laces through it and found the target with a remarkable combination of power and accuracy from a good 35 yards out.

“I just cut across the ball when I shot,” he explained. “I’d never really thought about hitting a shot like that before, but for some reason that day I just said to Scotty to roll it to me and I’d have a go.

“He did that and I just ran up and smashed it, and thankfully it went right in the corner.

“It was weird because I’d done something like it in training, but it wasn’t in a free-kick scenario, the ball just rolled to me and I shot, and it did a similar thing. So that was probably why I had the thought of doing it in the first place.”
