Tom Cairney’s beautifully caressed volley at Molineux has come third in the voting for Goal of the Season.
It’s an effort that won plaudits from far and wide, with Fulham fans naming it their goal of 2016, Wolves supporters willingly applauding as the net bulged, and Football League enthusiasts voting it December Goal of the Month.
With Fulham 2-1 up and half-time approaching, Chris Martin was chopped down near the corner flag on the left hand side of the pitch that we were attacking.
Stefan Johansen clipped the free-kick to the unmarked Cairney with just the right amount of weight, and the skipper guided a fine volley inside the near post from the edge of the D.
A remarkable game ended up with the sides sharing the spoils following a 4-4 result, but Cairney’s wonderful effort was certainly the highlight.
It was always going to be a contender for Goal of the Season, and ended up with the bronze medal having claimed 21.7 per cent of the vote.
