Goals in either half from Floyd Ayité and Stefan Johansen earned Fulham a first home league win of the season on Wednesday evening.

Goals in either half from Floyd Ayité and Stefan Johansen earned Fulham a first home league win of the season on Wednesday evening.

Ayité put his side in front at the end of the first half when he converted a Sheyi Ojo delivery, and Ryan Sessegnon could have added a second after the restart when he headed wide from the Togolese’s cross.

It looked as though we may have lived to rue that miss as Hull City restored parity when Jarrod Bowen headed in at the second attempt.

But Johansen’s deftly executed finish earned the Whites a deserved three points, with substitute Yohan Mollo going close to wrapping it up in stoppage time when he hit the crossbar.

Slaviša Jokanović made three changes to the side that drew with then league leaders Cardiff City at the weekend. Neeskens Kebano and Ojo returned from injury to occupy the two wide attacking roles, with Mollo dropping to the bench and Sessegnon to left-back, where he replaced Denis Odoi who was named amongst the substitutes along with Ibrahima Cisse, who made way for Oliver Norwood in the middle of the park.

Just because Sessegnon was playing further back didn’t mean he wasn’t going to cause Hull problems going forward, and he did just that in the fourth minute when his low cross dropped for Norwood in the box, whose shot was bravely blocked by Michael Hector. The subsequent corner eventually dropped to Ojo, but he shanked his effort over the bar.

Practically all of Craven Cottage thought Ayité had opened the scoring shortly after the quarter hour mark. Following a neat bit of skill he unleashed a fierce strike with minimal backlift that took a wicked deflection to leave Tigers goalkeeper Allan McGregor wrong-footed. The ball drifted towards goal in what seemed like slow-motion before dropping agonisingly wide of the post.

Ayité then got on the end of the subsequent corner, but his shot on the spin was brilliantly turned over by McGregor.

The next corner came to nothing and Hull broke quickly with Nouha Dicko, who drew a full-stretch save from David Button with a rasping 20-yard drive.

Kebano won and took a free-kick at the midway point of the first half, but bent his strike a yard over the bar from just outside the box.

Some liquid football from Fulham after half an hour tore Hull apart and could have resulted in the opener, had McGregor not clawed Ryan Fredericks’ cross away before it landed on Ojo’s head a yard out.

Ojo got in behind again less than a minute later and tried to clip a shot towards the far post, but the angle was against him and it went behind for a goal-kick.

The breakthrough arrived a matter of minutes before half-time. Brave work from Kebano saw Fulham maintain possession in a dangerous area, with Ojo beating his man down the left and cutting back to Ayité who opened up his body and slotted home.

It should have been 2-0 five minutes after the restart when an immaculate Ayité cross picked out Sessegnon, but the left-back angled his header wide of the target.

The visitors levelled three minutes later. Kamil Grosicki clipped a ball into Bowen whose initial header was brilliantly saved by Button, but it fell kindly for the Tigers forward to nod in the rebound.

Things could have got worse moments later had it not been for Button who did well to repel Ola Aina’s powerful strike after the wing-back had nipped in behind.

The Fulham stopper then saved from Dicko who volleyed an effort straight down the middle.

After surviving some strong pressure from the Tigers, Fulham restored their lead in the 62nd minute. Ayité attacked Fredericks’ cross with an attempted overhead kick, and his lack of contact turned out to be a blessing in disguise as Johansen was able to bring it down before guiding an exquisite flick into the top right hand corner that kissed the underside of the bar and dropped in.

A few minutes later City replaced David Meyler with Jon Toral, whose first act was to concede a free-kick on the edge of his own box when he barged into Kebano. Johansen stepped up but his swirling effort went inches wide.

Kebano was then withdrawn to rapturous applause, with Mollo taking his place, while Fraizer Campbell came on for Dicko.

The home fans though Campbell should have been sent off within moments of coming on after he caught Tomas Kalas with an elbow, but the referee Mr Robinson decided the award of a free-kick was punishment enough.

McGregor had been in fine form in the away goal and he needed to be at his best again in the 73rd minute when he beat away Ayité’s rising shot.

Fulham were furious with the referee when he halted a counter attack as we broke three-on-one after Stephen Kingsley went down holding his head. Much of the anguish due to the fact that play was allowed to continue earlier in the game when Fredericks and Ayité were in a similar predicament. Kingsley was thankfully okay to continue after some brief treatment.

Tim Ream could have wrapped things up in the 81st minute when Mollo played him in following a corner, but McGregor was out quickly to smother his poked effort.

Hull then withdrew wing-back Kingsley who sprinted off to be replaced by forward Adama Diomande, moments before Ayité dragged a shot wide from the left.

Johansen and Sessegnon then took it in turns to display some beautiful skill which culminated in the latter drilling across a dangerous ball that was taken off Ojo’s toes before he could convert.

Campbell drew a routine stop from Button with a tame strike from the edge of the box with five minutes remaining.

Just as five minutes of stoppage time were announced, Jokanović made a double change as Ojo and Fredericks made way for Odoi and Aboubakar Kamara.

Hearts were in mouths midway through that period when Sessegnon diverted Grosicki’s inswinging cross towards goal, but thankfully it landed on the roof of the net.

Fulham countered from the corner that followed, with Mollo’s powerful shot deflecting over via the crossbar.

There was time for Hull to launch one more long ball into the box, but they were unable to do anything with it as the Whites held on for a hard-earned victory.
