Fulham’s New Year began in gutting circumstances as Brighton & Hove Albion came from behind to win 2-1 at Craven Cottage.

Fulham’s New Year began in gutting circumstances as Brighton & Hove Albion came from behind to win 2-1 at Craven Cottage.

After Stefan Johansen had seen his first half penalty saved by former Whites favourite David Stockdale, a deserved home lead was taken after the break through Lucas Piazon’s smart finish.

The Seagulls had threatened little throughout the encounter, but turned things around with two goals in as many minutes. First Tomer Hemed netted from 12 yards after he was fouled by Ragnar Sigurdsson, and then Lewis Dunk headed into an empty net after David Button had parried Anthony Knockaert’s effort.

Fulham continued to push forwards, as they had all game, but no equaliser was forthcoming, much to the disappointment of the majority of the bumper crowd inside the ground.

Two changes were made to the side that began the abandoned match in Reading three days earlier, with Sigurdsson and Matt Smith coming in for Michael Madl and Floyd Ayité.

Brighton had the first half chance of the game six minutes in when an exquisite slide-rule pass sent Sam Baldock in. He tried to square to the unmarked Glenn Murray in the middle, but Sigurdsson made a superb sliding tackle to deny him the chance to do so.

Three minutes later Ryan Fredericks fizzed in a wicked high cross that Stockdale could only punch half clear. The ball eventually dropped to Johansen who flashed his shot a couple of yards over the bar.

The Whites right-back was getting forward to excellent effect and another cross shortly afterwards caused havoc in the visitors’ penalty area, with someone in red finally managing to poke it behind for a corner.

A slick Fulham move then saw Piazon slip Sone Aluko in, but his shot was blocked by one of a number of Brighton defenders in the box.

But then the Whites were gifted the opportunity to go in front when Bruno flicked the ball up into his arm, giving the referee little choice but to award a penalty. Johansen stepped up but Stockdale guessed right to ensure our 2016/17 penalty hoodoo continued. Bruno was booked in the aftermath for dissent.

The home fans felt Dunk should have been shown a straight red card in the 22nd minute after kicking Piazon in the chest in an off the ball incident, but Mr Attwell decided a talking to was sufficient.

Fulham were creating all the openings, and after Scott Malone miscued a strike and Kevin McDonald lashed one wide, Smith was an inch away from getting on the end of Aluko’s inviting centre.

Despite being under the cosh, the Seagulls fashioned a chance in the 36th minute when Baldock picked Tim Ream’s pocket and found Knockaert. He looked for the open Murray who was making his way into the box, but the delivery had too much pace and the striker couldn’t get it under control.

Five minutes before half-time Smith harshly had his name taken for an apparent high foot as he contested a ball in the opposition box. Said high foot was probably two yards or so in the air.

Fulham would have wanted to show the same gusto in the second half as they did in the first, and they were duly rewarded for their positive attitude with the breakthrough goal 10 minutes after the restart. Cairney picked out the run of Piazon in a crowded area, and the Brazilian curled a beautiful low effort beyond Stockdale and inside the far post.

It could have been two on the hour mark when Malone found Piazon with a floated cross from the left, but the Brazilian had to generate all the power himself and could only head into the arms of Stockdale.

A lapse in concentration then gave Baldock a sight of goal when he was found by a looped ball over the top. He went to lob Button but the Fulham stopper was able to palm his shot behind.

The first substitution of the game then saw Solly March come on for Jiri Skalak, with Smith then making way for Stephen Humphrys moments later. The changes continued on 70 minutes, with Hemed replacing Baldock.

Knockaert was then booked for throwing his toys out of the pram when a goal-kick was the decision following his shot over the top, as he felt Button got a touch.

Fulham were then dealt a huge blow as Brighton were awarded a penalty of their own when Hemed and Sigurdsson tangled in the box. Hemed took it himself and coolly rolled it into the bottom left hand corner.

And if that was a bitter pill to swallow, things got even worse a minute later. Dunk broke forward and played in Knockaert to his right, his shot was parried by Button but straight back to Dunk who nodded his side into the lead.

The Whites looked for an immediate response as some excellent play by Cairney saw him slip the ball to Humphrys who in turn fed Fredericks, but his cross-cum-shot missed the far post.

Both sides then made a further change, with Knockaert coming off for Jamie Murphy, and Denis Odoi replacing Piazon. He slotted in at right-back with Fredericks moving up to the wing. With time running out, Neeskens Kebano was introduced in place of Kevin McDonald.

As we entered four minutes of stoppage time, Fredericks was booked for hauling down Murray in the centre circle as Brighton looked to break. Three minutes later March drew a foul from Kebano, which the visitors used as an opportunity to waste as much time as possible, something that Dunk was yellow carded for.

The game management was worth it for Brighton, though, as they held out to secure a smash and grab victory.
